Root canal therapy
Previously, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you’d probably lose that tooth. Today, with a dental procedure called a root canal therapy (RCT) we may be able to save that tooth.

Inside each tooth is the nerve, which provides nutrients and sensation to your tooth. It runs like a pipe down through the root of the tooth. If bacteria enters the nerve chamber then this will kill the nerve tissues, and your tooth will eventually become infected and ultimately you could lose it.

Some common reasons for bacteria reaching the nerve chamber:

  • Severe decay
  • Trauma to the tooth
  • Fracture of the tooth
  • A cracked filling that has been left untreated

Root canal therapy involves removal of the nerve tissue and, cleaning, sterilisation and sealing of the root canal to protect it. With modern techniques and advanced instruments, root canal therapy is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving very few appointments.
