Fluoride

Fluoride is used on teeth for several important reasons:

  1. Strengthens Tooth Enamel: Fluoride helps to remineralize and strengthen tooth enamel, the outer protective layer of the teeth. When enamel is exposed to fluoride, it can become more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and acidic foods and beverages. This, in turn, helps to prevent tooth decay and cavities.
  2. Prevents Tooth Decay: Fluoride inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth and reduces the production of acids that can erode tooth enamel. This makes it an effective tool in preventing tooth decay and the development of cavities.
  3. Reverses Early Tooth Decay: In cases of very early tooth decay, when the damage is still in its initial stages and hasn’t progressed to a cavity, fluoride treatments can help to reverse the damage by remineralizing the affected areas. This is often done through fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, or professional fluoride applications at the dentist’s office.
  4. Protects Against Sensitivity: Fluoride can help reduce tooth sensitivity by strengthening enamel and minimizing exposure to nerve endings in the teeth. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who experience discomfort when consuming hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages.
  5. Beneficial for All Ages: Fluoride is beneficial for people of all ages, from children whose teeth are still developing to adults and seniors who want to maintain good oral health throughout their lives.
  6. Community Water Fluoridation: Many communities add fluoride to their public water supply at controlled and safe levels. This practice has been recognized by organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Dental Association (ADA) as one of the most effective ways to provide fluoride benefits to a large population.
